Squash NZ:  2016 Cousins Shield / Mitchell Cup

This year’s event was held in Masterton over Queen’s Birthday weekend and consisted of a strong contingent of 15 mens teams competing for the Cousins Shield and 9 womens teams vying for the Mitchell Cup. For the first time ever Herne Bay submitted two mens teams and were seeded 2nd and 8th for the event.

With a fine track record over the previous 5 years (2 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third) Herne Bay were out to take their first victory since 2012. All started well for the A team in the opening round on Friday with a solid victory over Hawkes Bay. This was followed up on Saturday morning with another win over Lugton Park putting the A team into the semi-final that evening against North Shore.

Meanwhile the B team had a couple of tough opening matches losing a tight battle against the 9th seeds Mitchell Park – only a couple of points being the difference! This eventually saw them play off for 9th/10th place overall where they narrowly lost another tense match, still finishing in a respectable 10th place for the tournament and if a couple of points had gone their way might’ve seen them finish a lot higher.

The A team stepped out on Saturday evening against a buoyant North Shore team who earlier in the day had upset 3rd seeds Thorndon. However our HB boys are made of stern stuff and played outstanding squash to kill off any hopes of North Shore progressing further, and so once again we were into another Cousins Shield final! This time against Squashways ChCh who had won the previous 2 years.

First up was George Crosby against the World number 81....a respectable showing as always but no chance against a player of that quality. Second up was Chris Lloyd – same thing unfortunately and Herne Bay were 2-0 down to Squashways ChCh. Next up were the number 1’s for both teams – World number 34 Paul Coll against our very own Welsh import Peter Creed (World number 80). The standard of squash was absolutely amazing, and we can see why Paul Coll is being touted to push into the World’s top 20 with a classy final win over Peter to secure the Shield.

So once again we finished a very credible 2nd place in the country, a fine effort from all the players of both teams. Our two imports (Nathan Stephenson from Australia and Peter Creed from Wales) had a great time and we thank them for commuting across the ditch to play for us. Next year we’ll hope to go one better!

Finally a big thanks to the following people: Jason Kay & Brendan Taylor – team managers, drivers and tour organisers supreme; Shayne Hubert for his generous sponsorship again this year; Glen Wilson for coming out of retirement and showing us some of his fine racket skills; and of course Matt Taylor – the driving force of the Cousins Shield at Herne Bay.

Squash Superchamps Entry

Its that time of year again and entries are open for the Superchamps Team events. They are by Grade and require a maximum of 7 per team. If you are interested please either sign up on sheet downstairs on notice board or send email to hbprcsquash@gmail.com. The tournament commences 26th of July so you need to be available to play from the Tuesday of this week onwards.

Entries need to be in to me by no later than Friday 17th June. If there are more than 7 players wanting to play in a grade it will either go based on points, playoff or depending on numbers maybe 2 teams for a particular grade.
