Squash Update

Hi all,

The squash season is well under way so I thought I'd give you a quick update on what's been happening at the club and what's coming up in the near future on the squash scene.

Interclub

Autumn interclub has been and gone, we had nine teams competing in this competition, congratulations to Paul Gardiner's Men's Divisions 2 who won their pennant. Masters interclub has started and Senior Winter starts next week, we've got 16 teams competing across these competitions. Good luck to all the players!

B Grade Tournament

The B grade tournament was held in mid March and attracted around 90 entries, a good mix of players from various clubs, thanks to all our members who played in the tournament and a special thanks to all the members who helped out with organizing it. Congratulations to the four club members who took out their divisions: Gareth Knight (Men Div 2), Dan Ryland (Men Div 3), Geoff Cameron (Men Div 5) and Kerryn McLellan (Women Div 5).

Club Nights

Club nights are continuing in full swing every Thursday at 7pm with a dedicated core of people turning up. Come on down for a casual hit, meet some new opponents and have a quiet drink to celebrate the upcoming weekend!

Hit n Fit sessions

Chris Lloyd, our club coach, is running 'Hit n Fit' sessions, starting this Sunday 10am. This will be a 2 hour session for anyone interested, it will involve around 1hour 20mins of hitting in groups and then a fitness session to finish, bring your running shoes if the weather is good!! This is perfect preparation for those wanting to enter Super Champs (see below) or just to improve your general game. The cost will be $10 per person for the session. There's only room for 16 players, so first in first served, register by putting your name down on the club notice board or contact Chris on 027 2866 028.

To kick off this 1st session we'll be having a BBQ aftewards.

Super Champs

Super Champs are fast approaching, only 11 or so weeks away! For those that don't know, Super Champs are a club competition, where each club can put forward a Men's and Women's team in each grade (B, C, D, E & F) to compete against the other Auckland clubs. The Auckland winners then go on to compete against the other regional winners at the Nationals.

Super Champs are a great way to improve your squash and fitness and can also be great fun; however in order to do them justice you need to commit to training regularly to build up your fitness and racquet skills. If you're keen to give Super Champs a crack this year, there will be forms up on the Squash notice board for you to express your interest till 14th May. We will have managers and coaches appointed to each team and this will allow 2 months of training before it kicks off mid July.

Managers/Coaches: We need people to help out with managing and coaching the Super Champs teams. If this is something that interests you, please let me know and we'll work out what team will benefit the most from your help!

Open Tournament

Our Open tournament is only 4 weeks away, 27th - 30th May. This is shaping as another great Herne Bay Open tournament, with strong interest from around NZ including a number of NZ's top squash players, top prizes and of course a great night planned on the Saturday night.

Get in early and enter via our website. Entries close Friday 21st May:

Catch you guys around the club,

Mike Eyre
